It was a huge weekend for the Fretwater gang. Brad had the incredible honor of being inducted into the River Runners Hall of Fame at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River, Utah. Holy schmoly! He’s not even dead yet! Here’s the Fretwater Boatmobile heading north with a five-pack.

On Friday night Brad had the additional honor of inducting Glen and Bessie Hyde, whose biography he wrote a quarter century ago. (Sunk Without a Sound).

Although nearly all the informants of Brad’s books have passed on, three children of Glen Hyde’s nephew were there to accept the honors.

Bruce, Joan, and Ann, children of Bob and Bobbie Emerson. Bob was Glen Hyde’s nephew and his tales formed the heart of the book.

On Saturday there was a Yak Attack boat parade. SportYaks to honor inductees Buzz Belknap and his sister Loie; kayaks to honor inductee Gary Nichols, Utah kayak legend; Doryaks to honor Brad’s and Fretwater’s legacy; and a Scowyak to honor Glen and Bessie.

Glen and Bessie disguised as Cricket and Glade.

The weather thought it would be a fun chuckle to have a strong upstream wind for most of the parade. So poor Cricket and Glade, who had driven most of the night from a Grand Canyon takeout to get there, had to manhandle the scow sideways down the river. Arghhh.

Then Brad was up again, introducing Dawn Kish’s talk about her project with Tad Nichols’s photography and cameras.

A lavish dinner followed, then the main event. Martha Ham gave a great presentation inducting Buzz and Loie, Roy Webb and Gary Nichols’s family rang in Gary, and finally Tim Cooper, who has known and adventured with Brad for more than fifty years, gave a hilarious induction for Brad.

There was a lovely turnout for the event. Here is the Dimock clan– middle brother Tom with Barbara in red and orange, eldest brother Doug with Nancy in gray hats, and in the center, nephew Mike with Sue. That’s Brad scowling in the upper right.

Cricket and Glade had to rush back to Flagstaff to launch yet another Grand Canyon trip (ahhh, to be young) and Brad wandered home in a bit of a daze, stopping in to visit his old boss and friend Ken Sleight, who recently turned a young 96.

Now what?
