A Bit of Boating

So… it’s been a while since I caught up here. Boatbuilding comes to a standstill once Cricket and Glade begin their back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back river season. So that gives me time to putter here at home. We put sprinklers of the roofs of the house and shop to turn on in case of an advancing forest fire, heaven forbid.

Did a bit of overdue maintanence on the buildings. We installed a composting toilet in a new little bathroom in the shop, for when we start teaching again this fall.

And a bunch of other little projects.

But I also got to do a bit of boating. I rowed a punt on a San Juan Sierra Club trip with Tse Kooh Outfitters, and got to experience a midnight flash flood at John’s Canyon.

We went out to Lake Mary for a photo shoot for FunLovin Fleecewear, and test out my new 12’er. She floats!

I put a few thousand more dollars into my mouth.

I found something creative to do with the stern of Mille Crag Bend.

Cricket, Glade, and I got to do another San Juan punt trip, again with Tse Kooh. Four punts and a Puntiac. It’s the most punts on the San Juan in at least half a century.

Cricket did an on-river seminar in letter painting.

We even got to extract a sunken punt! A punken sunct?

All’s swell that ends swell.

The little Puntiac is an absolute hoot.

And I had the pleasure of joining a few other ancient mariners from the old dory days for a run through Westwater Canyon. It was Roly Poly’s first whitewater and she is all I had hoped she would be. Quick, responsive, corky, and fun. I’m excited to run Grand Canyon in her next month with a full load.
